The Challenge
"I've had three firms quote me wildly different prices for the same scope of work, and honestly I can't tell if the cheapest one is a bargain or a trap. What am I actually supposed to be checking before I hand over our books?"
This is one of the most common calls we get from business owners in Bur Dubai and across the UAE who are switching from an in-house bookkeeper, or leaving a previous accountant who missed a filing deadline. Price is the easiest thing to compare on a quote sheet, which is exactly why it is the most misleading criterion to lead with. Getting this decision wrong is not just an inconvenience — a firm that misses a VAT return or a Corporate Tax registration deadline exposes you directly to FTA penalties, and by the time you notice, the damage is already done.
Our Approach
- Verify UAE-specific tax expertise — ask for their track record on VAT registration (mandatory at AED 375,000 taxable turnover, voluntary from AED 187,500) and Corporate Tax filing (9% above AED 375,000 profit, 0% below, with Small Business Relief available for revenue up to AED 3m); a firm without hands-on EmaraTax experience is a liability, not a saving.
- Check their compliance and record-keeping process — a serious firm should explain how they track your filing deadlines, maintain the 5-year VAT and 7-year Corporate Tax record-keeping requirements, and what happens if a deadline is at risk, rather than leaving it to you to remember.
- Ask for real references, not just a client logo list — speak to at least one existing client in a similar sector or size bracket, and confirm the firm has actually handled a first Corporate Tax return or an FTA query, not just bookkeeping.
We encourage every prospective client to treat the first conversation as due diligence in both directions: we walk through our own process for VAT and Corporate Tax compliance, show how we track deadlines, and are happy to have you speak with existing clients before you commit.
The Result
When you select a firm on expertise, process and verifiable references rather than the lowest quote, you get consistent, deadline-driven compliance and someone who can represent you correctly if the FTA ever raises a query — the difference shows up not in the invoice, but in the total absence of penalties, corrections and last-minute scrambles at filing time.
The Takeaway
"Choose an outsourced accounting firm on UAE tax expertise, a documented deadline-tracking process, and verifiable client references — price alone tells you nothing about who will actually protect you from an FTA penalty."
