Why does my UAE business need professional bookkeeping now?
Since corporate tax took effect, your taxable income is calculated directly from your financial statements — so accurate, standards-compliant books are now a legal requirement, not just good housekeeping. Clean records also protect your VAT position and any reliefs you claim.
What's the difference between bookkeeping and accounting?
Bookkeeping is the day-to-day recording of every transaction — sales, purchases, receipts and payments. Accounting builds on that to produce financial statements, interpret the numbers and ready you for tax filing. You need both, and they must reconcile.
Which accounting standard must my financial statements follow?
UAE businesses prepare financial statements under IFRS. Businesses with annual revenue not exceeding AED 50 million may elect to apply IFRS for SMEs, and where revenue is below AED 3 million the statements may be prepared on a cash basis.
Does a dormant or loss-making company still need to keep accounts?
Yes. Once your company is registered, the obligation to maintain proper books and file returns applies whether or not you make a profit. Keeping clean records even in a quiet year protects your reliefs and avoids penalties.
How long do I need to keep my accounting records?
For corporate tax, all accounting records should be kept for 7 years after the end of the tax period to which they relate. For VAT, records must be retained for five years, and 15 years for real estate.
