Do I have to register my business for VAT?
What's the current VAT rate, and what's the difference between zero-rated and exempt?
The standard rate is 5%. Some supplies are zero-rated — including exports, international transport, and specified healthcare and education — while exempt supplies, such as certain financial services and bare land, sit outside the VAT system entirely. Zero-rated supplies are still reported; exempt ones are not.
When are my VAT returns due?
Returns and payment are due within 28 days of the end of each tax period — quarterly for most businesses, and monthly where annual turnover exceeds AED 150 million. A nil return is still required even if you had zero sales.
Can I recover the VAT my business pays on its costs?
Yes — once registered, you recover the VAT paid on genuine business costs by offsetting it against the VAT you charge. Where input tax exceeds output tax in a period, the business is entitled to a refund from the FTA.
