The Challenge
"I run a small trading business from Bur Dubai turning over about AED 900,000 a year, with maybe AED 200,000 left as profit after expenses. Everyone keeps saying corporate tax is 9%, but my neighbour swears his shop pays nothing. I don't understand who actually owes what, and I'm worried I'll either overpay or get penalised for underpaying."
This kind of confusion is common among small business owners in the UAE, because the corporate tax rate isn’t a single flat number applied to everyone. The rate that applies to a business depends on how much taxable profit it makes in a tax period, not on its industry, size of premises, or turnover alone.
Our Approach
- 0% band — the first AED 375,000 of taxable income in a tax period is taxed at 0%, so small and early-stage businesses often owe no corporate tax on that portion.
- 9% band — taxable income above AED 375,000 is taxed at 9%, applied only to the amount over the threshold, not the whole profit figure.
- Small Business Relief — businesses with revenue at or below AED 3 million in a tax period can elect to be treated as having no taxable income for that period, provided they meet the eligibility conditions, effectively removing the corporate tax liability entirely while relief remains available.
When we take on a client, we first work out whether their revenue and structure make them eligible for Small Business Relief, then, if not, we calculate taxable income correctly so the 0% band is applied before the 9% rate on anything above it, and we make sure registration and filing are handled through EmaraTax within the correct deadlines.
The Result
A business owner who understands this structure knows their actual liability well before filing: revenue under AED 3 million may mean electing Small Business Relief and owing nothing, while a profit of AED 200,000 sitting entirely within the 0% band also means no tax is due, and only profit above AED 375,000 attracts the 9% rate on the excess. Getting this right from the start avoids both overpaying out of confusion and underpaying through a miscalculated return.
The Takeaway
"UAE corporate tax is 0% on taxable profit up to AED 375,000 and 9% only on the amount above that; many small businesses under AED 3m revenue can also elect Small Business Relief and owe nothing at all."
