# The Challenge
"We renewed our trade license and moved offices within the same month, filed the VAT return on time as always, and assumed that was enough. Nobody told us the FTA portal itself needed updating too."
Mr A runs a small trading company in Dubai that has been registered with the FTA for VAT for several years. When the business renewed its trade license and relocated to a new office, the team updated its bank and internal records but did not think to log in to the EmaraTax portal and update the tax record itself.
Like many registered entities, Mr A believed that once VAT (or corporate tax) registration was complete, no further action was needed unless a return was due. The requirement to actively update supporting documents on the portal within a fixed window is one of the most commonly missed obligations under UAE tax law.
# Our Approach
– Flagged the rule — explained that FTA-registered entities must update tax records, including trade license, Emirates ID, passport, and address, within 20 days of any change.
– Reviewed the portal — logged into EmaraTax with Mr A to check which documents were outstanding and how much of the 20-day window had already passed.
– Filed the updates and set a reminder system — submitted the revised trade license and address details, then built a simple internal checklist so future changes trigger an FTA update automatically.
The principle we apply with every client is that FTA registration is not a one-time event; it is an ongoing record that has to mirror the company’s real-world documents at all times.
# The Result
Mr A’s tax record was brought back in line with the FTA portal before the update was overdue enough to trigger a penalty, which can run to AED 1,000 per document per month, up to a maximum of one year. He now has a standing process to update tax records within the required window whenever a license, address, or ownership document changes.
# The Takeaway
"Registering with the FTA is the beginning of your compliance journey, not the end. Every change to your license, address, or ID documents must reach the portal within 20 days."
