# The Challenge

"We had simply moved to a bigger office and appointed a new authorised signatory to handle our VAT affairs. It didn't occur to us that the tax authority needed to be told separately — we assumed our trade licence update was enough."

Chi Trading, a Dubai-based trading business, updated its trade licence to reflect a new registered office address and a new authorised signatory. What the business did not realise is that VAT registration details held by the Federal Tax Authority are a separate record from the trade licence, and any change to core information — including signatory and address — must be reported to the FTA directly within the prescribed timeframe.

Under Cabinet Decision 49/2021, failing to notify the FTA of such amendments is a standalone violation, carrying a penalty of AED 5,000 for a first offence and AED 15,000 for a repeat offence, regardless of whether the business was otherwise fully VAT compliant.

# Our Approach

Registration health checks — we periodically review a client’s EmaraTax profile against their current trade licence, bank details, and signatory records to catch mismatches before the FTA does.

Change-trigger protocols — whenever a client tells us about a new address, a new signatory, a change in business activity, or a change in legal form, we treat it as an immediate FTA notification task, not an afterthought.

Direct EmaraTax filing — we handle the amendment submission itself, including any supporting documents the FTA requests, so the update is logged correctly and on time.

The underlying principle is simple: VAT registration is a living record, not a one-time filing, and every material change in the business must be mirrored with the FTA the moment it happens.

# The Result

Across our client base we have handled this for more than 300 businesses, protecting them from penalties in the range of millions by ensuring changes in signatories, addresses, and other registration details were notified to the FTA correctly and on time.

# The Takeaway

"Updating your trade license is not the same as updating your VAT record — every change to your business details needs to reach the FTA in its own right."
