The VAT return errors worth checking first are deposits recognised late, out-of-scope supplies reported as zero-rated, invalid tax invoices, missing tax credit notes, reverse charge declared but not recovered, the wrong emirate split, and last quarter’s figures copied forward. All seven can be caught before the 28 October 2026 deadline for the July to September quarter. Below, each error says how to spot it and how to fix it before you file.
What are the most common VAT return errors in the UAE?
Finding them takes no advanced tax knowledge, only someone looking at the figures with the source documents open. Work through the list against your own quarter.
1. Output VAT on deposits recognised late
When you take a deposit or advance payment, the VAT point can arise on receipt, not on the final invoice. A business that waits to invoice at delivery reports the VAT a period too late. Spot it: bank receipts with no invoice in the sales listing. Fix: issue the tax invoice for the amount received and include it in the quarter. Our guide on VAT on advance payments and deposits sets out the timing.
2. Out-of-scope supplies reported as zero-rated
A zero-rated supply is taxable at 0% and goes in a specific box. An out-of-scope supply is outside the VAT law and does not belong in the taxable figures. Mixing them distorts your return and your recoverable input VAT. Spot it: a zero-rated total that includes services to a customer abroad or other items you have not tested against the rules. Fix: test each type of sale and recode it. The post on out-of-scope supplies has the test.
3. Invalid tax invoices under Article 59
Article 59 of Cabinet Decision No. 52 of 2017 sets out what a tax invoice must contain. If your supplier’s invoice lacks a required detail, your input VAT claim on it is exposed. If your own invoice lacks one, your customer has the problem and comes back to you. Spot it: invoices without a tax registration number, the wrong company name, or a missing supply date. Fix: ask the supplier for a corrected invoice before you file, and correct your invoice template. Read fixing invalid tax invoices under Article 59.
4. Missing tax credit notes
A refund, a return or a post-sale discount needs a credit note that refers to the original invoice. Without it, the output VAT stays on your return. Spot it: refunds in the bank with no matching credit note. Fix: issue the notes in the quarter they relate to. See avoiding VAT penalties on missing tax credit notes.
5. Reverse charge declared but not recovered
On imported services, the reverse charge means you declare the output VAT and, if the purchase is recoverable, claim the input VAT in the same return. Doing half of it overstates what you owe. Spot it: an output entry for a foreign supplier with no matching input entry. Fix: enter both sides and keep the supplier’s invoice.
6. The wrong emirate split
The return asks for standard-rated sales by emirate. The FTA’s VAT return guide allocates each sale to the emirate of the establishment connected with the supply, so booking every sale to head office when you trade from branches in other emirates puts the wrong figure in the wrong box. Spot it: all sales shown in one emirate when you have establishments in several. Fix: allocate each sale to the establishment it belongs to.
7. Copying last quarter’s figures
A return that looks like last quarter’s with small edits is the one that most often contains a stale figure. Spot it: identical totals or a box left unchanged. Fix: rebuild each box from this quarter’s listings, then compare with last quarter as a reasonableness check only.

A quick pre-filing test
- Does total sales on the return equal total sales in the ledger, after documented adjustments?
- Does every input VAT claim have a valid tax invoice behind it?
- Do bank receipts and payments reconcile to the listings?
- Are zero-rated, exempt and out-of-scope supplies in separate boxes?
- Does the payable amount match the payment you plan to make by 28 October?
A yes to all five means you are in a good place. A no tells you which part to fix. The first sign of trouble is usually a reconciliation that will not close, so deal with it early.
What if you find an error after filing?
If you spot a mistake after the return is submitted, the usual route is a voluntary disclosure to the FTA. The Tax Procedures Law’s executive regulation lets some smaller errors be corrected in a later return instead, so check which route applies before you act, and do not ignore it. We prepare and submit voluntary disclosures for clients, and we look at your whole quarter first to find any related items. The details depend on the size and nature of the error, so send us the return and the records and we will say what the correction involves.
What this costs
Fixing mistakes is quoted case by case, because the work depends on how many periods are affected. Preventing them is cheaper and is included in our packages, which cover VAT, Corporate Tax and books for one fixed price, agreed in advance and set by your monthly transaction volume. Our post on what it costs to fix VAT filing mistakes explains how the quote is built.
Our Zero Penalty Assurance is in writing: where your data reaches us by the agreed cut-off dates, no FTA penalty arises from late or incorrect filing, and if a penalty arises from a mistake in our submission, we bear it.
Our cut-off for this quarter
VAT data must reach us by the 15th of the month after the period closes, which was 15 October for this quarter. If you are past it, message us today and we will say what can still be filed by the 28th. Automatic reminders go out before every cut-off. Send documents online or by WhatsApp, and we reconcile, review the seven items above, and file. We have served 572+ UAE businesses over 18+ years, with zero FTA penalties on our watch.

Late recognition of deposits, out-of-scope supplies reported as zero-rated, invalid tax invoices, missing credit notes, unrecovered reverse charge, wrong emirate split and copied figures.
What is an out of scope supply?
A supply outside the scope of UAE VAT, so it is not taxable at any rate. It is different from a zero-rated supply, which is taxable at 0%.
What does Article 59 of the UAE VAT law require?
Article 59 of Cabinet Decision No. 52 of 2017 lists the details a tax invoice must carry. An invoice missing them is exposed when you claim input VAT.
How do I correct a VAT return after I have filed it?
Usually through a voluntary disclosure submitted to the FTA; some smaller errors can be corrected in a later return. Send us the return and records and we will advise on the correction.
What is the difference between input VAT and output VAT?
Output VAT is the VAT you charge customers. Input VAT is the VAT you pay on purchases and may recover. The return nets one against the other.
