Accountants for the entertainment industry in Dubai keep production houses, event agencies, content creators and talent agencies on top of VAT, Corporate Tax and project books. The tricky parts are sponsorship and barter, client disbursements, event deposits, exported services and freelancer payments. Each has a VAT answer that depends on the facts. We handle all of it at a fixed price, with Zero Penalty Assurance in writing.
What do accountants for the entertainment industry do differently?
A production house and a plumbing company do not post the same transactions. You invoice in stages, take deposits months before an event, pay crews and freelancers by the day, buy kit and locations on a client’s behalf, and bill brands abroad. Generic bookkeeping flattens all of that into sales and expenses. We keep each project, shoot or event separate, so you can see what it earned and what it owes in tax.
We set up books for production houses, event agencies, content creators with a licence, and talent agencies.
VAT on sponsorship and barter
A sponsorship is usually a supply of services: you give the sponsor exposure, access or branding, and they give you money. That is generally a VAT-taxable supply at the standard rate, with an invoice to match. Barter works the same way. When a hotel gives you rooms in return for a mention, there is a supply in each direction, and each has a value for VAT even though no cash moved. The rules are in Federal Decree-Law No. 8 of 2017 and its Executive Regulation, Cabinet Decision No. 52 of 2017, which treat non-cash consideration as consideration. We value the exchange, issue the tax invoice and record both sides.
Disbursements and recharges to clients
Agencies often pay a supplier on a client’s behalf, then bill the client. If the cost is a true disbursement under the Executive Regulation, it can sit outside your VAT. If you contracted with the supplier in your own name and resell it, it is a recharge, and VAT applies to the full amount. The paperwork decides which one you have. Our article on fixing mischarged VAT on disbursements shows how this goes wrong and how it is corrected.
Deposits, advance payments and event timing
Events are paid for early. Under the VAT law, the tax point can arise when you receive payment or issue an invoice, whichever comes first, so a deposit taken in October for a March event may already need VAT in the return for the period that includes October. Our guide on VAT on advance payments and deposits lays out the sequence. We track deposits separately from earned revenue, so the books stay honest when an event is postponed or cancelled.

Exported services to foreign clients
If you produce content or run a campaign for a client outside the UAE, the supply may be zero-rated as an export of services, provided the conditions are met. That includes a customer outside the UAE, no benefit enjoyed in the UAE, and proof such as a contract and payment. If a condition fails, the supply stays standard-rated. Read why UAE VAT registration still applied to exported services before you assume a foreign client means no VAT.
What the FTA expects from an entertainment business
- VAT treatment: Standard-rated sponsorship, ticketing and production fees. Zero rating only where export conditions are proven. Disbursements and recharges separated per invoice. A tax invoice for every taxable supply.
- Freelancers: Payments to a freelancer carry VAT only when the freelancer is VAT-registered and charges it. You need their tax registration number on the invoice to recover the input VAT. Payments to an unregistered individual do not carry VAT, but they still need a record.
- Record-keeping: Contracts, call sheets or event briefs, invoices, receipts, bank statements and supplier files for each project, kept as the Tax Procedures Law requires.
- Typical volume: A creator with a few clients sits in our lower band. An agency with many suppliers, crew payments and receipts usually lands at 250 to 300 transactions a month. We confirm after counting your real documents.
Corporate Tax on project-based revenue
Corporate Tax follows accounting profit, so when you record revenue matters. A long production that runs across two financial years needs a consistent method for when income and costs are recognised, applied the same way each year. A deposit received is not automatically income for the year, and a finished project not yet invoiced may still be. Small companies should also check whether they qualify for Small Business Relief under Ministerial Decision No. 73 of 2023 (revenue up to AED 3M, elected on the return, for tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2026). If you freelance under a licence, our answer to whether freelancers pay UAE Corporate Tax explains when a licensed individual is taxed.
Every taxable person files an annual return. Late filing is penalised monthly: AED 500 per month for the first 12 months, then AED 1,000 per month, under Cabinet Decision No. 75 of 2023.
Why owners in media and events pick a fixed-price firm
Your income swings with the season. A big festival quarter followed by a quiet one should not mean a bigger or smaller accounting invoice. A fixed price gives you one number to plan around. Our team is CA-led, we do not bill by the hour, and you hear from us before every cut-off, never after a penalty.
What this costs
Whether you are a content creator, a small studio or an event or production agency with many suppliers, the price is fixed in advance and set by the number of transactions you post each month, never by the hours we spend. If you run two or three companies, we quote them together on request.
Our Zero Penalty Assurance, in writing, says that where your data reaches us by the agreed cut-off dates, no FTA penalty arises from late or incorrect filing, and if a penalty arises from a mistake in our submission, we bear it.

Frequently asked questions
Is sponsorship income subject to VAT in the UAE?
Generally yes. Sponsorship is usually a supply of services at the standard rate, and barter is valued as consideration under the VAT law. We check each agreement.
Do I charge VAT on content made for a client outside the UAE?
Possibly not. An export of services can be zero-rated when the customer is outside the UAE, the benefit is not enjoyed in the UAE and you hold proof. If a condition fails, VAT applies.
Do freelancer payments carry VAT?
Only if the freelancer is VAT-registered and charges it. Keep their tax registration number on the invoice to recover the input VAT.
How should an event agency treat deposits for VAT?
A deposit can create a tax point when it is received, even if the event is months away. Record it separately from earned revenue and report the VAT in the right return.
How much do accountants for media companies cost in Dubai?
One fixed price, agreed in advance and set by your monthly transaction volume, with Zero Penalty Assurance in writing. Send us your approximate monthly transaction count and we reply with the price.
