Input VAT You Can Claim in the UAE: Travel, Imports and Q3

Why UAE businesses choose us:

Input VAT you can claim in the UAE includes VAT on staff business travel supported by a valid tax invoice, VAT on imports and reverse-charge purchases, VAT on utilities and rent for your licensed address, and in some cases VAT on pre-registration costs and bad debts. Customer entertainment and personal-use vehicles are blocked. Your Jul to Sep return and payment are due on 28 October 2026, so gather the documents this week.

Zero Penalty Assurance, in writing: where your data reaches us by the agreed cut-off dates, we assure that no FTA penalty will arise from late or incorrect filing. Should a penalty arise from a mistake in our submission, we bear that fine.

Which input VAT can you claim on your Q3 return?

Input VAT is the VAT you paid on business purchases. You deduct it from the output VAT you charged customers, and you pay the difference to the FTA. A claim stands on one test: the purchase was for making taxable supplies, and you hold the document the VAT law asks for. For the basics, see output VAT vs input VAT.

The items below are easy to leave unclaimed. Each has the paper you need in hand before 28 October.

1. Staff business travel

Flights, hotels and ground transport for a business trip can carry recoverable VAT. Many owners skip them because the supplier was foreign or the booking was made through a card statement. The rule is simple: you need a valid tax invoice in the company’s name, the trip must have a business purpose, and the VAT must actually have been charged. Foreign invoices that show no UAE VAT give you nothing to claim. Our guide on reclaiming VAT on business travel goes step by step.

Document needed: tax invoice in the company name, trip purpose noted (client meeting, trade fair), and the payment record.

2. Imports and reverse-charge purchases

When you import goods, import VAT is accounted for on your VAT return once your tax registration number is linked to customs, and it is claimable if the customs declaration is in your company name. When you buy services from outside the UAE, the reverse charge applies: you account for the VAT yourself in the return as output tax and claim the same amount as input tax, so the net effect is usually nil. Many owners forget the reverse-charge entry entirely, which leaves an error on the return.

Document needed: customs declaration or import entry showing your tax registration number, and the supplier’s invoice for reverse-charge services.

3. Utilities and rent on the licence address

Electricity, water, telecom, internet and office rent attached to your licensed premises are ordinary business costs with VAT you can recover. The claim fails when the bill is in a landlord’s or a former tenant’s name, or when the premises is a home also used for private life.

Document needed: tax invoice or utility bill with your company name and the premises address on your licence. If the bill is in another name, fix that before the quarter closes.

4. Pre-registration expenses

Costs you paid before you registered for VAT can sometimes be claimed on your first return, within a limited look-back window set by the VAT executive regulations (Cabinet Decision No. 52 of 2017). The window depends on whether the cost was for goods you still hold or for services, so confirm the exact period against the regulation before you claim. Anything outside it is lost.

Document needed: the original supplier invoices, plus proof the goods are still in stock or the services were used for taxable supplies.

5. Bad-debt relief

If a customer never pays and you already paid the VAT on that sale, the VAT law allows relief once the conditions are met, including time elapsed, a write-off in your books and notice to the customer. Skip a condition and the relief is refused. Our post on bad debts and VAT relief lists them.

Document needed: the original invoice, write-off entry and proof of the demand sent to the customer.

What you cannot claim

  • Entertainment: hospitality for customers, suppliers and other non-employees is blocked from input recovery under the VAT executive regulations (Cabinet Decision No. 52 of 2017).
  • Personal-use vehicles: VAT on a car available to the owner or staff for private use is blocked. A vehicle used only for business is a different question and needs records to prove it.
  • Purchases without a valid tax invoice: a receipt without your tax registration number, the supplier’s number or the VAT amount rarely supports a claim.

Claimed something you should not have? Correct it before the FTA finds it; a voluntary correction usually costs less than an audit finding.

What this costs

Input VAT checks are included in our monthly packages, which cover VAT, Corporate Tax and books. Each package has one fixed price, agreed in advance and set by your monthly transaction volume, including for low-volume companies.

Your checklist before 28 October

  • Collect all tax invoices dated 1 July to 30 September, including travel.
  • Match import entries to your customs declarations.
  • List reverse-charge services and check the entries exist in the return.
  • Confirm that utility and rent bills carry your company name.
  • Mark entertainment and private-use vehicle costs as blocked.
  • Send the whole set to us so we can file before the date.

Our cut-off for VAT data is the 15th of the month after the quarter closes. If you are past it, send your documents today anyway and tell us the situation, and we will file as early as the evidence allows. WhatsApp +971 54 1721 823.
