A sole establishment owner registers for Corporate Tax as a licensed natural person once turnover from business activity crosses the threshold set in Cabinet Decision No. 49 of 2023, which is AED 1 million in a calendar year. You register on the FTA’s EmaraTax system with your Emirates ID, trade licence and bank details. If you are already late, the penalty is AED 10,000, and the FTA’s waiver initiative allows it to be waived in qualifying cases. We handle registration and filing at a fixed fee.
Who needs sole establishment Corporate Tax registration?
Under the Corporate Tax Law (Federal Decree-Law No. 47 of 2022), a natural person is taxable only when the turnover from a business or business activity requiring a licence crosses the threshold in Cabinet Decision No. 49 of 2023. Salary, personal investment income and income from personal real estate are outside this test. The turnover that counts is what your licensed activity brings in during the calendar year, before costs. Our post on what counts as revenue explains how revenue is measured, and do freelancers pay UAE Corporate Tax covers the freelancer version of the same rule.
If your sole establishment stays below the threshold, you are not a taxable person, and you do not need to register. If you cross it, registration is required for you personally as the licensee, because a sole establishment has no separate legal personality. The tax number belongs to you as a natural person, linked to the licence.
Step-by-step: how to register on EmaraTax
- Check your turnover. Add up the revenue of all your licensed activities for the calendar year. If you hold more than one licence, add them together.
- Gather your documents. Emirates ID, passport copy, trade licence, a contact email and mobile number, and your bank account details. Send us scans online or by WhatsApp and we prepare the application.
- Open or access your EmaraTax account. The account is created with your own details, using the UAE Pass or an email login.
- Choose the right taxpayer type. Select natural person and sole establishment, not a legal entity. This is the step where mistakes happen.
- Enter the licence and activity details. Licence number, licensing authority, activity description and the start date of the activity.
- Confirm the contact person and authorised signatory. This is you, unless you have appointed a representative.
- Submit and download the certificate. The FTA reviews the application and issues a Corporate Tax registration number. Keep the certificate with your business records.
After registration, the return is due within nine months of the end of your tax period, as set by the Corporate Tax Law. For a sole establishment the tax period is normally the calendar year, so the return falls due in the following September. We diarise the date and our automatic reminders go out ahead of it.

The common entity-type mistake
The error to watch for is registering a sole establishment as a company or as a free-zone legal entity. The EmaraTax options look similar, and a wrong choice produces a registration under the wrong taxpayer type. The consequence is a tax number that does not match the licence, which blocks the correct return and can lead to notices. This can be fixed, but the correction is easier when it is made early. Read fixing a mistaken registration for how a correction is handled in practice.
What if you are already late?
Late Corporate Tax registration carries an administrative penalty of AED 10,000 (Cabinet Decision No. 75 of 2023, as amended by Cabinet Decision No. 10 of 2024). The FTA has run a waiver initiative for businesses that missed the deadline and then registered, and in qualifying cases the penalty has been waived. Those who had already paid were refunded. About 100 companies we assisted had the AED 10,000 penalty waived, and our total penalties saved stand at AED 13M+. Whether yours qualifies depends on the dates and your filing position, so we check them before applying.
Registration is only the first step. A late return is penalised monthly: AED 500 per month for the first 12 months, then AED 1,000 per month after that (Cabinet Decision No. 75 of 2023). So an unfiled return costs more with every month that passes. Our post on a sole establishment that missed the deadline walks through the sequence for a business that missed the date, and avoiding late filing penalties covers the return side.
What this costs
Quick Corporate Tax Filing is for businesses with sales under AED 3M. It is a fixed fee, quoted on request on WhatsApp, and it covers the registration and the annual return. If you also need monthly books and VAT, our packages are priced in advance by the number of transactions you post each month. If you own two sole establishments or a sole establishment and a company, one package can cover them, quoted on request.
Why a fixed fee suits a sole establishment
A sole establishment owner usually does everything alone. An hourly accountant turns a short form into an open-ended bill. A fixed fee means you know the price before you send documents. The team is CA-led, setup takes a maximum of seven business days, and to open your file we ask only for the trade licence, your Emirates ID and your passport; the EmaraTax application itself needs the contact and bank details listed in the steps above.
Zero Penalty Assurance, in writing. Where your data reaches us by the agreed cut-off dates, we assure that no FTA penalty will arise from late or incorrect filing. Should a penalty arise from a mistake in our submission, we bear that fine, and we confirm this assurance to you in writing.
For Corporate Tax, the cut-off is a date agreed with you, because tax periods vary. Automatic reminders go out before it, so your return is never left to the last week.
